{UAH} Prof. Kashambuzi: Why frequent school/property destruction in Kigezi region?

Prof. Kashambuzi

Keep your ears to Radio West. I do not know if they send over the internet. if not someone must think about it as Radio Simba did in the early 90's. the technology is more abundant and cheaper.

I really do not understand it. These are government  not private schools student are destroying. No one is profiteering on the Banyakigezi, something which appears to be unavoidable society phenomenon and a deep seated psychological problem in this region.

Everybody can't be rich whatever amount of effort, you put in it - it is as natural as it is; abilities, propensities, dispositions, tendencies etc, .

Kabale University too is on a receiving end and YET this is one project every Munyakigezi would have supported in monetary form and kind.

For Kabale municipal council to deny a University
land , with some of the best Uganda brains on pretext of being a private institution, an institution bringing in not only high profile  jobs, but higher education closer to Bakiga, is not only outrageous but scandalous.

I was told that it took two years to allow just toilets to be built in Kabale town - can you imagine just toilets and how much land is that for natural convenience?!

I pray against prayers that Banyakigezi can see what is crucially important to them other than guarding buildings of their fellow rich Bakiga away from Kigezi. Kigezi can generate a lot of wealth just lying their at the sole of Bakiga's feet!

It is very painful to think about it, and consequences now that the number of serious crime among Bakiga, in other parts of the country is on the rise!.

Prof. Kashambuzi

One day, at around 10.00 a.m. I was seated somewhere in Kabale town. An elderly gentleman unknown to me, who was actually a priest, by the white collar under his jacket, came to me.

Without saying anything else, started with a lot of bitterness, complaining and narrating to me how students were destroying school and property in Kigezi region.

I asked which school had the students destroyed – unknowingly that I was a visitor in Kabale he asked, " don't you know this school (did not record the name of the school) which the student burnt down?". The previous week students had burned down the school, I heard from this priest, was one of the best schools with very good structures students destroyed.

I just answered yes. He went on and on and it appeared to me that student violence and destruction of schools in the region had gone beyond what was socially acceptable.

As we talked it felt, the community was lost on a solution to these acts of vandalism by students. I have been following these events ever since and it appears every year one or mores schools property is destroyed in Kigezi region! The media seems to have lost interest in reporting about these nasty events by students in the region.

My question is, why is there a high frequency of student vandalism and destruction of school property in Kigezi region as compared to other regions of Uganda?
