South African celeb sparks controversy with cultural ceremony

January 8, 2015 — South African sports presenter, Minenhle "Minnie" Dlamini, caused controversy over the cultural ceremony procedures marking her journey into womanhood on Saturday

South African TV personality Minnie Dlamini had to address critics who claim she used the incorrect procedure during a traditional ceremony known as uMhlonyane. The 24 year-old sports presenter celebrated the Zulu tradition, which takes place when a girl reaches puberty to teach and advise her about womanhood.

One criticism is that the spear Dlamini carried signifies a girl's virginity and is used for uMemulo, a Zulu ceremony performed for girls when their parents want to thank and tell them that they are ready for marriage.

Minnie who felt "insulted" said,"uMhlonyane and uMemulo are almost the same. The differences are the rituals that are performed. At home, uMemulo is performed for someone who has a man who has asked to marry her."

She went on to add that each family's rituals were unique and unlike religion were not cast in stone.
