A Liberian newspaper, Daily Observer, has singled out Dr Anne Deborah Atai-Omoruto, a Ugandan doctor, as one of 2014's persons of the year.

This is in recognition of her efforts in battling Ebola in the country. Atai, a World Health Organisation (WHO) consultant on Ebola case management, has been in Liberia since July 2014 where she has trained over 1,000 health workers in Ebola treatment.

"This is my vocation. I committed myself to treat people, to make them better," the 58-year-old told AFP at the Island clinic in Monrovia, where she is leading a team of 12 Ugandan doctors, nurses and assistants.

Atai, the head of the Community Health department at Mulago hospital, boasts of a career experience that spans 14 years in battling cholera, Ebola, Marburg and yellow fever outbreaks. She has also conducted research in infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV and malaria, and is the chairperson of the department of Family Medicine at Makerere University's college of Health Sciences.

Front Page Africa, a Liberian online newspaper, also reported that Dr Atai's heart and soul is in Liberia.

"When we look into our souls and into our hearts, when you have seen me, I sit here, up to midnight, sometimes up to 1am, sometimes up to morning. It is a lot of work; a lot of strength. I not only do management, but also patient care," she said, according to the paper.

It is now 11 months since the deadly Ebola virus crossed into Liberia through the Republic of Guinea, affecting it (Liberia) so much that it now reports the second highest number of deaths at 3,471 according to WHO.
