A student was stabbed on the neck by his girlfriend at Masinde Muliro university in Kakamega on Wednesday.

A hostel neighbour said trouble began when the student knocked his girlfriend's door for an hour while drunk.

She refused to open but he reportedly forced himself in and started beating her forcing her to retaliate.

"Though they have been a troubled couple none of us ever thought things would ever get this ugly one day," the neighbour said.

The stabbed student denied being drunk saying he has never taken alcohol or any other drugs.

In an interview with KNA in his room, he said he hopes university authorities and his parents will not pursue the case.

He said he would like to continue with his studies as soon as he recovers.

His doctors said he had mild bruises and is in stable condition.

Security officers at the campus said they were aware of the incident but refused to give more information, saying they were not authorised to speak for the university.

The dean was away on an official assignment.
