On Tuesday, General Mugisha Muntu, the incumbent FDC president visited Luweero town as part of his countrywide mobilization tour ahead of the 2016 polls.

Earlier in the day heavily armed anti riot cops and traffic police led by Eugene Elwaru, the Officer in Charge of Luweero Central Police station deployed around Fatima Hall and along Kampala-Gulu Highway to block Besigye and Muntu from leading a procession to Kasana play ground for the rally.

However, Besigye sneaked into Luweero using Mulindwa David road and showed up at the rally unnoticed by the cops. Shortly after Besigye’s arrival police rushed and tightened security at Kasana play ground.

Bwanika Bbaale, the Luweero FDC chairperson says Besigye switched routes fearing that police could block him from attending the rally.

Bwanika says the heavy police deployment was aimed at Besigye since they didn’t plan any procession in the town. He accused the police of targeting and harassing Besigye even in situations that don’t warrant force.

Lameck Kigozi, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson downplayed the fact that Besigye beat police surveillance saying they deployed to engage him and other supporters who would want to go outside the agreed guidelines and disrupt traffic

In his speech at the rally, Besigye said the NRM government was unwilling to implement Electoral reforms that would ensure free and fair elections.

He said without the reforms, the opposition would be wasting time to participate in the polls.

Mugisha Muntu, the FDC president said Museveni’s regime was approaching its end.

During the rally dozens of NRM mobilizers from Nakaseke district led by Robert Mwesigye aka “Mwoyo Gwa Museveni, an ardent participant on FM stations announced their defection to FDC saying government had failed to handle poverty among the youths.
