KAMPALA - A city pastor has been convicted and sentenced to two years in jail over the theft of a vehicle.

Fred Serubiri, 39, a resident of Mengo-Kisenyi Zone in Kampala's Rubaga Division, pleaded guilty to charges of theft.
He is an assistant pastor at Pastor David Kiganda's Church located in Mengo-Kisenyi.
After being convicted, Serubiri sent the court into laughter when he pleaded with the magistrate for a lenient punishment, saying that he has to preach the word of God as well as look after his ten children.

He claimed each child was from a different mother.
"Your Worship, I was tempted to steal because I wanted to feed my siblings. Their ten mothers were all over me, threatening to take me to police for not fulfilling my responsibility of looking after my families," Serubiri lamented.
He admitted that he had tried all means possible to get money but in vain, and was left with one option – to steal.

But his pleas fell on deaf ears, as LDC Grade One Magistrate Jolly Nkore could hear none of that. She went ahead and passed the verdict, insisting that as a pastor, he should live an exemplary life.
"As a sole breadwinner you should live by your preaching, not the opposite," Nkore told the pastor.

According to prosecution, Serubiri and a one Moses Mutungi stole a blue RAV4 car (UAQ 690L) valued at sh20m on March 31 last year.
They reportedly stole the vehicle – belonging to Pivotal Business Services – from the Law Development Centre (LDC) parking yard on the hill of Makerere.
Stephen Awori, the manager of Pivotal Business Services, said the company car had a tracking device which helped police to trace and eventually intercept it at Migyera Town in Nakasongora district.
Upon arrest, the duo (Serubiri and Mutungi) told police that they were driving the car off to neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) where they had got a potential buyer.

The two were arrested and taken to Central Police Station in Kampala where they were charged with conspiracy to commit felony – which is contrary to Section 390 of the Penal Code Act – before being taken to court.
