TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- The result of a transatlantic friendship between a 59-year-old Traverse City man and a woman from Uganda is an ongoing fraud investigation, according to police.

Officials with the Traverse City Police Department say a 31-year-old Uganda woman used the man to pick up and store car parts that were purchased using stolen credit card numbers. Following the acquisition, officials believe the parts were supposed to be shipped internationally.

Investigators confirmed the scam has been ongoing since January.

Using the stolen data, police said the women purchased around $15,000 in parts from a local car dealership. Those parts were then picked up and stored by the Traverse City resident, who planned to send them to Uganda before police caught onto the scheme.

The parts purchased using stolen credit card numbers from California included tires, headlamps and tail lamp assemblies, police stated. Officials believe all of the parts have been recovered before they could be shipped.

At this time, police have made no arrests in the case, though a report will be sent to the prosecutor's office for review.
