Strathclyde University strips Pistorius of degree
February 3, 2015 — Strathclyde University stripped jailed South African paralympian (Oscar Pistorius), of an honorary degree awarded to him in 2012
A spokesman for the Scottish university said on Monday that the degree was revoked following the athlete's conviction for culpable homicide.
The 28 year old Pistorius was jailed for five years in October 2014, by a Pretoria court which found him guilty of culpable homicide over the killing of his girlfriend (Reeva Steenkamp). Pistorius shot her but claims it was a mistake as he believed there was an intruder in the house on February 14, 2013.
Prosecutors are appealing the five-year court sentence, because it is too lenient in their professional view.
Strathclyde University awarded Pistorius the honorary degree in 2012, which is the same year he made history by becoming the first double-leg amputee to compete at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
