The evolution of fashion for men is at its peak, while men's fashion trends seem to be ever changing, facial hair or beards- have never been hotter, slicker and sexier.

Many celebrities are now sporting full beards, including goatee and moustache to the chin strip whilst becoming a trending fashion statement in the red carpet.

Hollywood celebrities have always dazzled with the ever so eloquent trends in facial hair. Bradley Cooper who is famous for his acting also rocks a stubbly chin, neck and cheeks, and soccer star David Beckham always looks on point and without doubt is the hottest athlete with facial hair.

To add to the list, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Will Smith whom has been sported with his facial hair for some time and still looks smashing and supper attractive as he ages.

Locally though, men in Botswana are also embracing the metro sexual look of grooming their beards. From the poised fuzz that the President of the Umbrella for Democracy, Duma Boko, portrays, looking youthful with a fuzz of hair gracing his chiselled face, to one of Botswana's A leisters in the entertainment fraternity, Moses Maruping also known as Rude Boy Paul rocking a full beard, with a straight edge scruffy look on each cheek and bare neck.

Also the popular singer Kast kept a touch of scruff with a goatee beard to give it a fuller sensual look. According to Sam in Blog, Salon Services Category posted on April 11, 2014 they are a bit daring, giving an appearance of someone who is a little rough and outdoorsy. No matter what beards are so hot, the look is a very masculine one that both men and women can appreciate.

In addition, Michelle Gaokgelwe an Administrator at a very posh beauty centre The Edge Beauty Centre, mentioned that they see a rise of men who come to look for services to trim, or cut their beards completely. She added that the popular one that most do is dubbed the channel O, which they cut the beards and trim the side burns and leave them covering the mouth, also that some prefer a cleaner look in cutting them all out.

"Modern day men are also particular with their cleanness self-grooming as they come for basic manicures and pedicures including massages", she said. Also, one of Gaborone's famous barbers and hair stylists from Glamour Zone Boutique, Gofaone Montshiwa mentioned that men nowadays are obsessed with looking good and their facial hair is one important aspect.

Montshiwa said that, most of his male loyal customers are more interested in how he is going to cut their hair but more emphasises on grooming and shaping their beards.

"A well cut beard does not only look good, but it changes the man's facial expression giving them a certain glow, and also when I cut them I take note of the shape of the face, be it rectangular or square and if it complements the hair cut", he says. He said that the popular trends are the channel O which is done by most corporate men or those who cut brush cut, or the clean shaven look for the conservative and school children, also Adidas shave that leaves strips on the chin, which he says is his signature look.

Monthsiwa also added that in the olden days they would use hair clippers, and razors to cut them, but since the evolution of technology they use modernised machinery which is like holding a pencil and creating art on their beards which are more sensitive to the skin, and are not irritant leaving patches and possible rush.

He added that one has to keep them lubricated to avoid itching, dryness and irritation, and to cut at least four times a month depending on their growth.

Further, for many, the beard does not only symbolise masculinity or maturity, cleanliness or responsibility, but in other religions such as the Muslim whom state that a man who shaves or shortens his beard is like a hermaphrodite, his Imamate near prohibition, his evidence is not valid, he will not have the right to vote or being voted for. Shaving and shortening the beard is the action of non-believers.

In Eastern Christianity, members of the priesthood and monastics often wear beards, and religious authorities at times have recommended or required beards for all male believers.

Male Rastafarians wear beards in conformity with injunctions given in the Bible, such as Leviticus 21:5, which reads "They shall not make any baldness on their heads, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor make any cuts in their flesh." The beard is a symbol of the covenant between God (Jah or Jehovah in Rastafari usage) and his people. ENDS
