{UAH} My story as a Ugandan diaspora nurse - by Mariam Namulindwa Aligawesa
I moved to UK from Uganda in 1998 to join family after completing primary school, and became a registered mental health nurse after gaining a mental health nursing degree.
Working in multiculturally diverse crisis and intensive care inpatient mental health services, I became interested in how to contribute to reducing inequalities and in the impact of cultural beliefs and views on health and illness. I explored these issues in an MSc degree in medical anthropology at University College London in 2012, which I did alongside my job. Focusing on the integration of traditional healing systems with the biomedical approach used by mental health services in Uganda, I started to contribute to mental health services within my community in Uganda and the UK.
