Mugabe turns to daughter, 24, as his successor

President Mugabe's plan to install his wife, Grace, to succeed him as Zimbabwe's leader appears to have been thwarted by her illness, leading to rising speculation that he is manoeuvring his daughter towards high office.

Last year he elevated his wife into senior positions within his Zanu (PF ) party, and she led a vicious campaign to remove Joice Mujuru, the former vice-president and potential leadership rival, from office.

In recent months Mrs Mugabe, 49, has fallen seriously ill, taking trips to Singapore for medical treatment at an exclusive clinic, and she has virtually disappeared from public view.
