Gulu.

American actor Forest Whitaker who starred as ex-Ugandan president Idi Amin in the movie Last King of Scotland, is funding charity works in post-war northern Uganda including building of a peace centre in Gulu.

Mr Whitaker was in Gulu in February to promote the work of the charity, Starkey Foundation, that gives hearing aids to people who cannot afford to buy them or are not aware of their existence.

Mr Godfrey Otobi Orach, the Uganda country coordinator for Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative, said Mr Whitaker was in Uganda to support the work of Starkey Foundation as part of the charity he has been doing in the country for the past four years.

According to Mr Otobi, among other projects initiated are training of youth in ICT, voluntary works, games and sports and peace building.

"Since 2012, at least 30 young people in the post-conflict Acholi sub-region and Kiryadongo District have benefitted from the initiative in similar trainings," he said.

The charity will also train the District Peace and Reconciliation Team in a bid to promote peace and harmony among the resettling communities both returning from internally displaced camps and captivity.
