Finance minister Syda Bbumba, flanked by Secretary to the Treasury Chris Kassami and Lands minister Daniel Omara Atubo, yesterday presided over the hand-over of the first tranche of the money, Shs1 billion, to representatives of the three kingdoms.
“This is part of the money the President promised you to enable your subjects fight poverty in your respective kingdoms through increased agricultural production,” Ms Bbumba said. “We have already sent the money to their bank accounts through electronic transfer but Memorandum of Understanding will be concluded between individual kingdoms and State House for accountability purposes.”
Daily Monitor has learnt that President Museveni promised the three kingdoms the money in February, with Buganda, which has the largest population, expected to receive Shs2 billion, while Busoga and Bunyoro are to pocket Shs1 billion each.
Out of the Shs1 billion paid out yesterday, Buganda will receive Shs350 million, with Busoga and Bunyoro getting Shs325 million each.
