Two Asians arrested issuing Ugandan passports

KAMPALA- An operation involiving police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs last Friday led to the arrest of two men of Asian origin over illegally issuing Ugandan passports.

The spokesperson at the ministry, Ms Pamela Ankunda, told journalists yesterday that the two were found in possession of various immigration documents belonging to the ministry, which they used to aid their work.
The two have been charging Shs235, 000 for a passport and would produce the passport in 10 working days.

"They had an extension of an immigration office because these passports are only printed from one place in the whole country. It is not by accident; they must be working with someone here (Internal Affairs ministry).

Passports are genuine
Ms Ankunda said the documents they were issuing were "genuine passports."

The accused were arrested from their offices at Cedoma Complex on Rashid Khamis Road and Prisma Plaza on Kampala Road.

Mr Benjamin Katana, the deputy spokesperson at the ministry, said the two are part of a bigger group.

"We believe the suspects have been working with insiders in the Immigrations Department and we are going to investigate this to its conclusion," Mr Katana said.

Most applicants for the passports were people of Asian origin seeking Ugandan expatriate passports.

He added that the passports issued do not have valid immigration qualifications.
