Soldier shoots waitress dead over Shs1,000

Amuru. Residents of Bibia Parish in Atiak Sub-county, Amuru District, were on Sunday evening left in shock after a Uganda People's Defence Forces soldier shot dead a bar waitress over Shs1,000.
The deceased was identified as Aisha Shida who hails from Kigumba District. She was working at a bar in Bibia parish while the UPDF soldier is attached to Bibia Barracks in Amuru District.
It is reported that last Saturday evening, the soldier drank two bottles of beer at the bar and paid Shs5,000 to the deceased with promises that he would pick the balance of Shs1,000 later.
However, when he went back to the bar on Sunday evening, the deceased reportedly denied any knowledge of him and labelled him a thief.
According to eye witnesses, the soldier got agitated ran back to the barracks for his gun which he is said to have used to shoot the deceased twice in the chest, killing her instantly.
Atiak Sub-county chairperson John Bosco Okullu in a telephone interview with the Daily Monitor on Monday confirmed the incident and blamed the soldier of acting unprofessionally.
"We are not happy with what happened in the area. The law should take its course on this officer who could not hold back his emotions on an unarmed woman," Mr Okullu said.
The body of the deceased was taken to Bibia Health Centre III waiting for postmortem test.
Fourth Division spokesperson Capt Thomas Olweny said he was unaware of the incident, but promised to follow up the matter.
By press time the soldier was said to be on the run.
