Uganda is almost set to honor promises it made last year to sponsor South Sudanese students for various courses at higher institution in the country, information from the South Sudan Embassy in Kampala confirmed on Friday.Last year, the government of Uganda announced a sponsorship to 100 South Sudan students, sparking an outrage among Uganda academia and public.
Although the scholarship scheme has delayed by close to a year now, information available shows that the two governments are in negotiations, and could conclude discussions on the matter by May.
The Education Attaché to South Sudanese embassy in Uganda Lual Akol Nhial, speaking in an interview said they had been engaging in high level discussions about the request.
He is hopeful that by the end of May, all the technicalities would have been solved and the first batch of students will be admitted under the scholarship scheme.
The President of South Sudanese Students Union in Uganda Adel Aguer Makuei, said his consultation with other students and the officials from South Sudan show that the two governments are in final discussions and the first intake could come in August 2015.
Lual says the priority of the government of South Sudan will be in training more students in technical and vocational education.
