{UAH} Apply Now: camouflage research & the Ecology of Vision

School of Biological Sciences
Fixed term contract staff
Full time
Salary £31,342 - £39,685 per annum
Job number: ACAD101372

A one-year fixed term contract Research Assistant/Associate position is available in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol. The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary group linking camouflage research, the Ecology of Vision and research into biological iridescence.

The BBSRC-funded project is "Deceptive Iridescence". The project will combine sensory and behavioural ecology, visual psychophysics, signal processing and optical analysis to test the visual impact of iridescence on object perception and discrimination.

You will be responsible for the development of protocols to enable the imaging and measurement of iridescence with a hyperspectral camera and will require the programming and setting up of robotic arms for camera and light mounting; programming and setting up a hyperspectral camera; and developing a pipeline for hyperspectral data acquisition and processing. Previous experience of these topics is not required, but previous experience of vision science or image processing, plus computer control of devices, is required, and familiarity with insect, human or bird visual systems would be an advantage. Familiarity with Matlab for programming and R for statistical analysis would also be an advantage.

In addition, you will take on the day-to-day administration of the project and dissemination of the experimental findings.

Ideal start date 8th June 2015.

The University of Bristol is committed to equality and we value the diversity of our staff and students.

Fixed term contract staff
Full time
Salary £31,342 - £39,685 per annum
Job number: ACAD101373

A three-year fixed term contract Research Assistant/Associate position is available in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol.

You will be responsible for the development of protocols to determine the impact of iridescence on detection and discrimination by insect and avian visual systems; the translation of hyperspectral spectra into insect and bird visual models; and the integration of behavioural and visual modelling data. Previous experience of these topics is not required, but previous experience of psychophysical experiments, vision science and/or sensory biology, together with the willingness to learn about the biological theory relevant to the evolution of colour patterns and iridescence, is required. No known allergy to insect or bird systems is essential, and a full UK driving license is required. Familiarity with Matlab for programming and R for statistical analysis would also be an advantage.

In addition, you will take on the day-to-day administration of the project and dissemination of the experimental findings.

Ideal start date 8th June 2015.
