LIRA Municipal Council has compensated Uganda Federal Alliance (UFA) party shs5.5m as an out of court settlement for case in which the party sued them for denying them use of the Mayor's Garden when they had been granted permission and paid for it.

Ndugu Omongo, the party's Regional Coordinator for Lango said they wanted to hold a rally at the Mayor's Garden in 2012 and were allowed by the council but at the last moment, the council denied them access.

Omongo said the then Resident District Commissioner Lira directed the town clerk to deny them the ground on unclear motives. He said police heavily deployed at the ground and denied them access.

UFA party then filed a case in the High Court through Oyugi Onono & Co. Advocates, and the trial judge gave them opportunity for negotiation to settle the matter out of court.

In the negotiation held before Assistant Registrar of the High Court Cissy Mudhasi, both parties agreed on sum of shs5.5m and UFA agreed to withdraw civil suit number 0025 of 2013 immediately on receipt of the payment.

The agreement was made and accepted for the purpose of compromising disputed claims and avoiding the unnecessary expenses. Inconveniences and uncertainty of litigation.

Omongo encouraged other parties and individuals to seek redress in court of law if they are aggrieved by systems in place. He said the courts have shown that they have a listening ear to the cause of the people.

"The courts for sometimes has shown that they have a listening ear to the cause of the people." he said.
