{UAH} UGANDA and ITS NCD's

Health Epidemic in Uganda
  • 75 percent of the disease burden in Uganda is preventable if key areas of the health system are strengthened.
  • Forty three (43%) of the deaths in Uganda's dilapidated hospitals in 2014 were due to Non-communicable diseases (NCD).
  •    The whole of Uganda with 34 million people has only 37 intensive care unit (I.C.U) beds.
  •  Meanwhile, M7 dished out 44 billion Shs. to NRM MP's for passing the Kyankwazi resolution that literally threw out Mbabazi, so that he can stand alone for the top NRM chairman post that will propel him alone to grab state political power.
  • As if that is not enough, Museveni is giving UNAA -$100,000 so that he have the ability to remote-control the organization from Kampala.

Poor funding to the health sector has resulted into high mortality rates caused by different diseases and the loss of health care personnel to countries where they get better pay than in Uganda.   At a recent conference of non-communicable diseases (NCD), Dr. Gerald Mutungi, the program manager NCD in the Ministry of Health presented deaths data from non-communicable diseases that showed a big rise from 20% in the year 2010 to 43% in the year 2014.   Forty three (43%) of the deaths in Uganda's dilapidated hospitals last year were due to non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, stroke, cancer, etc. This is data from government hospitals only. Please note that many deaths are not reported-- people just die at home, and data from private hospitals is not included in the above figures.

The 2001 Abuja declaration recommended that governments should allocate at least 15% of their national budgets to the health sector to attain universal access to health services. In the 2014/2015 budget, Uganda allocated 8.4% of the budget to the health sector.  Many people die in hospitals because these hospitals have no emergency care services or intensive care services. This includes the so called regional referral hospitals where critical patients are supposed to be referred to save their lives. The whole of Uganda with 34 million people has only 37 intensive care (I.C.U) beds- (only one ICU bed for every million people).
