Gulu.
A rainstorm blew off part of the roof on the newly constructed Gulu Main Market at the weekend.
The market was scheduled for commissioning later this month by President Museveni.
The incident comes about a week after the Gulu Municipal Council authorities rejected the multi-billion market, saying it does not meet the required standard.
The vendors are temporally working from Kaunda Grounds and Kakanyero site.
The Gulu Municipal Mayor, Mr George Labeja, criticised Dot Services Company, the contractors, for doing substandard work.
"I am not happy with the contractors. We can only take over the market when its standard conforms to what we want, the market has cracks on the walls that makes it risky for occupants," Mr Labeja said last week.
He said he gave the contractor two week to fix the defects but other faults had emerged on the structure.
The municipal speaker, Mr Kelly Komakech, said the contractors are lucky that the incident happened before the market was handed over, describing it as an eye opener.
Mr Komakech said the municipal council may spend a lot of funds in repair in future because of shoddy work done.
Earlier, the Dot Service Company manager, Mr Mahesh Umar, said his team would ensure they finish all the work before the market is commissioned.
The Shs26b market was funded by the African Development Bank.
In 2010, more than 2,000 vendors were relocated at the two temporary market sites of Kakanyero and Kaunda grounds to pave way for the construction of the Shs26 billion market funded by African Development Bank.
