{UAH} Chuka Ummuna: ATTENTION WBK

WBK,
Chuka Ummana's withdrawal from the Labour leadership is hitting the
evening TV news. All are saying it is probably good for the party that
Chuka got out of the kictchen before it got too hot. But others are
very disgusted that media blackmail can force a man out of a
leadership contest that he was perfectly capable of winning. It looks
like the right-wing press, led by the Daily Mail and Rupert Murdoch's
tabloids were preparing to write salacious tales about Chuka's private
life, basically branding him a "womaniser" who is not fit to be PM.
Some of his former girlfriends were being lined up to "tell their
stories" in some sort of tabloid soap opera. Also others were
investigating his late father, to try to dig some dirt as many people
still believe he was murdered in a fake car accident in Nigeria in a
dispute over oil money. I think Chuka made a decision to withdraw
because he did not want his late father drawn into public scrutiny and
he also wants to protect his own private life. He is a 36 year old
bachelor who has no intention of getting married soon - as a leader
he would find it near impossible to choose and pick his partners as he
wishes. It is the same dilemma that I would face if I stood for high
office in Uganda because people will keep bringing up my divorces and
sometimes tumultous love life, even though they all now behind me.

I hope he can come back in 2020 although in politics you are never
allowed to show a weakness to your opponents. You have to be as hard
as a chiselled marble
