Kamuntu's wife death renews cries over poor healthcare

Former Energy Minister Richard Kaijuka has asked government to set up modern hospitals to handle serious sicknesses like cancer that are costing Ugandans astronomical amounts of money for treatment abroad.

Mr Kaijuka was on Wednesday speaking at the burial of Aida Kamuntu, wife to Water and Environment Minister, Prof Ephraim Kamuntu, in Rwanyamukinya, Kasozi in Shuuku, Sheema District. Aida succumbed to cancer at Mulago Hospital.

"We need a modern hospital which can handle surgeries, cancer and other serious diseases that have forced a good number of people to go outside the country in search of modern treatment. We need to be serious on this because we are losing many people to cancer and other diseases," said Mr Kaijuka, who was the master of ceremonies.

Health Minister Elioda Tumwesigye responded: "We shall do whatever it takes to reduce the number of people dying of cancer."
