KIRUHURA. President Museveni has reportedly okayed the creation of Kashongi Constituency out of Nyabushozi County in Kiruhura District.
About 40 district leaders from Kiruhura reportedly travelled to State House last Tuesday and met the President over the creation of the constituency.
Mr Museveni reportedly reasoned that Kanoni Sub-county in Kazo Constituency joins Kashongi and Kitura sub-counties to form one constituency because the inhabitants there share cultural values.

According to sources, the leaders from Kazo refused, maintaining that they want a separate district.
The meeting ended without consensus on the constituency, but on Wednesday, Mr Museveni reportedly telephoned them, announcing that he had granted the constituency.
The news excited Kashongi and Kitura residents, who last Thursday converged at Kitura Community Hall to celebrate.

"After meeting the President, he asked us to go home and wait for his decision. But when we were travelling back, he called me on phone and said he had given us a county," Mr Leocadia Byakatonda, the Kitura Sub-county chairperson, told the residents.
When contacted, the Presidential Press Secretary, Mr Tamale Mirundi, could neither confirm nor deny whether the President had granted the creation of the constituency.

"The President meets many people and if the delegation from Nyabusozi was among them, well and good. Official communication will be made. However, the President wrote a letter on the guidelines of creation of new constituencies and that's what should be followed," he said.

BACKGROUND
While in Namutumba District in February, Mr Museveni hinted at a plan to create new constituencies. Uganda Media Centre boss Ofwono Opondo said the creation of new constituencies is based on the new census results, where there are areas with bigger populations that must be demarcated into new electoral areas.
