Hoima. The multi-billion shillings Hoima Central Market has developed cracks a year after it was handed over to the vendors.
Hoima Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Nyakahuma accompanied by a team of engineers last week inspected the market as part of investigations into the quality of work done.
The engineers, including Mr Hussein Lukungu, the deputy Uganda National Roads Authority station engineer Hoima, Mr Boneventure Kiiza, the Hoima Municipal council engineer, and Mr Julius Kaggwa, the technical supervisor for the National Water and sewerage corporation, discovered that the building has cracks that require urgent repair.
The engineers also observed that there was poor drainage in the market, shoddy work on the rails and on the floor.
"There are also holes in some iron roofs which are causing the roof to leak," the inspection report reads in part.
Mr Nyakahuma said he wrote to the ministries of Works and Local Government to institute an investigation after receiving several complaints from furious market vendors.
"We have conducted a joint inspection on the structure and indeed technocrats have discovered various defects," Mr Nyakahuma said.
But Amugoli General Enterprises Ltd, the company that constructed the market, downplayed the defects.
"There are minor defects on the structure which we are going to correct very soon. We are sending a team to work on them. There should be no cause for alarm," Mr Jacob Jabweli, the company managing director, told Daily Monitor by telephone at the weekend.
