Jubilee, Cord trade barbs over tender - Politics
A war of words broke out on Tuesday between Jubilee and Cord over the controversy surrounding the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital upgrading project.
Senate Majority Leader Kindiki Kithure led seven Jubilee lawmakers in blaming former Medical Services Minister and the current Kisumu Senator, Prof Anyang' Nyong'o, accusing him of having started the project.
The Jubilee team defended Deputy President William Ruto, who has been accused of having played a role in the inflation of the project cost to Sh28 billion.
But three ODM legislators addressed journalists at Orange House in Nairobi, where they asked Mr Ruto and the government to take full responsibility for the scandal.
"The so-called upgrade of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital was hatched under the watch of the former Medical Services Minister Anyang Nyong'o in 2012," said Prof Kindiki in a statement.
Others who signed the statement were senators Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet), Lenny Kivuti (Embu), Stephen Sang' (Nandi), Fatuma Dullo (Nominated), Joy Gwendo (Nominated) and Thika Town MP Alice Ng'ang'a.
The Jubilee legislators claimed Prof Nyong'o has been linked to the deal by businessman Herbert Ojwang' who implicated the DP before the Public Investments Committee (PIC).
"This is according to none other than Herbert Ojwang', a man who served as a personal assistant to the former Prime Minister and business associate but who is clearly a broker who masquerades as a whistle blower," said Prof Kithure.
They challenged Cord leader Raila Odinga to publicly explain the circumstances that led to his decision to fire Mr Ojwang' as his personal assistant a few years ago.
They maintained that the DP, who is alleged to have been involved in the deal that saw the project inflated by Sh 11 billion, was innocent.
But speaking separately, ODM MPs Junet Muhammed (Suna East), Simba Arati (Dagoretti North) and Florence Mutua (Busia County) said the government should act decisively in dealing with culprits mentioned in the multi-billion shilling scandal instead of engaging in smear campaigns against Mr Odinga.
"When one Herbert Ojwang' appeared before a parliamentary committee early last week, he did so to shed light on what was clearly a case of fraud involving himself, Chinese investors and Moi Teaching Referral Hospital in Eldoret and the alleged entry of the Deputy President into the deal which pushed everything through the roof and turned it into a rip-off of tax payers," said the legislators in a statement.
Mr Mohammed, who read the statement on behalf of his colleagues said: "We are shocked that Jubilee is now struggling to drag the name of Raila Odinga into the hospital scandal."
The MPs warned the government that it will be difficult to provide solutions to problems it faced by blaming Mr Odinga for all its faults.
