Sejusa lawyer says ISO trying to frame him

Gen David Sejusa (C) and his aides

The lawyer representing Gen David Sejusa's six aides, who are facing treason charges at the General Court Martial, claims he is being trailed by people he believes to be Internal Security Organization (ISO) operatives.

David Mushabe said in a letter to the ISO Director General Brig Ronnie Balya on April 23, that strange people have trailed him for the last six months.

Mushabe claims the unknown people often drive in vehicles with tainted windows and bearing no registration number plates or having their numbers covered to avoid being identified.

"That the said harassment was intensified since our client [Dr Mushabe] accepted legal instruction as one of Gen David Sejusa's lawyers who also defend Grace Nasasira and five others which case is currently before the General Court Martial," Mushabe's law firm wrote to Balya.

The letter, which is also copied to the Chief of Military Intelligence (CMI), Brig Charles Bakahumura, says that recently, some security operatives approached Mushabe's wife Monica and told her that her husband had offered them money to frame her for drug trafficking, an allegation Mushabe states is false and malicious.

"However, the wife refused to disclose the identity of the alleged intelligence operatives, which has caused our client anxiety and to believe that the said operatives might be planning to set him or his wife up for trumped-up criminal charges, harm or kill him," the letter reads further.

Mushabe requested Balya to help identify the said operatives. He also asked that ISO operatives be ordered to desist from such "illegal" acts.

"That you ask Monica Mushabe to disclose the identity of these operatives so that our client may face his accusers to present their evidence; provide our client with security because he lives in constant fear for his life because such people might kill him," Mushabe's lawyers wrote in their two-page letter, a copy of which The Observer has seen.

Asked to comment on the letter and his predicament, Mushabe said that despite the threats which began last November, he would not walk away from representing his clients - Sejusa's aides.

Balya couldn't be reached for a comment but an aide who declined to be named said his boss had received Mushabe's letter. He told us that Balya and another senior ISO officer named Adonia Nuwagira had met Dr Mushabe last month and assured him of security.
