Police have arrested six supporters of Presidential hopeful Amama Mbabazi in Kawempe Division, Kampala.

The arrests followed the youth's address to the media, saying Mbabazi will improve the quality of healthcare and education services in the country when elected President.

The youth were led by Richard Kirekyankuba, the founder of the controversial NRM Poor Youth Group.

The youth pointed out that they would further distribute seedlings for coffee, mangoes and oranges. They further claimed the Mbabazi presidency would distribute hoes and seedlings to each farmer to boost agriculture.

"We want Uganda to go back to the level where we were better than Brazil in producing coffee in the whole world, which pride we have lost under this regime," Kirekyankuba noted.

According to the youth, each village under the Mbabazi will have a healthy centre IV on top of working village health teams.

The youth said they would soon embark on a countrywide programme of distributing books and geometry sets to primary and secondary schools.

After addressing journalists, police swung into action before arresting six youth activists.

"They are still being rounded up at Kawempe Country Inn where the press conference was taking place," said Chimp Corp Kenneth Kazibwe who is at the scene.

Police say the youth are being held on grounds of holding an illegal assembly and circulating unauthorised election campaign materials.

Police have previously warned and arrested supporters of Mbabazi for what officials have described as "premature electioneering."

Mbabazi recently announced plans to stand for presidential elections in 2016.
