{UAH} Chinese retail spreads in Ugandan amid local jealousy
Folks;
I'm an avid free market ideologue, but with a principled bias for fair competition. I'm a fan of Adam Smith's when he said that we don't owe our bread due to the magnanimity of the baker, but because he wants to make money.
But, by the same argument, the government should not facilitate one baker at the expense of the rest, and expect all bakers to come out even.
The Chinese who are doing petty, retail business in Uganda are not competing fairly with indigenous traders.
First, the Museveni government confers the Chinese layers upon layers of tax exemptions for being "foreign investors. This exemption allows them to import whatever they want to bring to Uganda. How can a government justify subsidizing foreign shopkeepers who deal in locally available merchandise, yet offer no incentives to its own citizens?
The quality of the Chinese-made products is infamous worldwide; yet, the Museveni government has no problem opening up every avenue for the Chinese to flood Uganda with substandard goods that might compromise the health of consumers, if not the country as a whole.
