Thirty nine years ago this week (on June 27, 1976), Entebbe International Airport played host to an Air France Boeing
airbus plane, which had been hijacked by Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine.
The plane was carrying 248 passengers, with a crew of 12. It was flying from the Israel capital, Tel Aviv and was
destined for Paris, France and commandeered to Entebbe.
This provided a setting for Israeli commandos who mounted an operation on July 4, 1976. By the time the guns fell silent, seven hijackers and 20 Ugandan soldiers, three hostages as well as the commander of the Israeli mission, Jonathan Netanyahu had been killed.
Joe Nam, a New Vision correspondent, visited Col. Moshe Betser, a veteran who took part in the operation.
New Vision will on Friday , Saturday and Sunday, we bring you a series of the intriguing stories of the Operation Thunderbolt, which was later renamed Operation Jonathan in honour of Lt. Col. Netanyahu.
The new-look Sunday Vision on June 28 will carry the climax of fresh revelations by Betser, who is widely referred to as Muki in Israel.
Despite the raid, Muki refers to Uganda as his second home because he lived in the country in the early 1970s and trained Ugandan paratroopers. He says Israel's problem was with Idi Amin, then Ugandan president, who allowed Palestinians to keep Israeli hostages in Uganda.
"It's unfortunate that Uganda had such a bad leader at that time. We never wanted to hurt any Ugandan. Personally, it
pained me that I had to fight the soldiers I helped train," said Muki.
Readers will get the intriguing minute-by-minute details of what happened at Entebbe in the series that will run in New Vision, Saturday Vision and Sunday Vision this week.
