{UAH} DR KAYONGO YOU HAVE NEWS

Dr Kayongo;

Just take a look at this. These guys are already working as a team and not waiting for cash from the government to build their roads. And it's just under devolution, an inferior system to federal.

In Summary

  • Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia and Trans-Nzoia to work together.

Five governors have resolved to worker together to improve roads in their regions.

Ken Lusaka (Bungoma), Wycliff Oparanya (Kakamega), Moses Akaranga (Vihiga), Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia), Patrick Khaemba (Trans-Nzoia) said they have resolved to allocate funds in their budgets to rebuild road networks to spur growth in the agricultural sector.

Mr Lusaka, who spoke at the Kakamega ASK show, said the economies of the five counties depend on agriculture. He said efforts should be made to provide subsidies to farmers to increase food production.

"We are working on a joint plan to rebuild roads and infrastructure," said Mr Lusaka, one of the conveners of the caucus that holds consultations on development.

He said the governors would ensure farmers received subsidised fertilizer and seeds.

In addition, the governor said, farmers need affordable credit facilities to adopt new technology.

Mr Lusaka said the county governments would encourage farmers to consolidate their sub-divided land to embrace mechanised farming for profitability.

He said county chiefs are also discussing how to improve service delivery.

"Unless we work hard as county governments to provide subsidies for farmers and create marketing networks, our efforts to step up agricultural production would be a pipe dream.

"Better infrastructure would open up markets for farmers," said Mr Lusaka.
