Ed Miliband has been accused of hanging around Parliament 'like an awkward relative at a funeral', following last month's disastrous election defeat.

The former Labour leader has made a high profile return to the Commons - regularly taking his seat on the backbenches and intervening on debates.

Allies have suggested he could make a political comeback like failed Tory leaders William Hague and Iain Duncan Smith – rebuilding his reputation on the front line of British politics.

However, in a major blow to Mr Miliband, it is understood that none of the Labour party leadership contenders are willing to give him a role in any future shadow cabinet.
