{UAH} I THINK HE WAS AN ANGEL

Folks,

Today I took a taxi to a hotel I am putting up in for toady and dont know how long will be in bcos any time I could be sent packing to another city or town or village..

Thing about this taxi ride, as I try to relive the ride now, is that I couldnt tell who the driver was even tho I am safe, sound and lazying in comfort.

So, I get out of the airport and hop into this taxi. Driver asks where I come from and i reply "Uganda". After a few mins of silence while he pulled into traffic he asks me what I could see or identify inside his taxi as different from all else. Immediately I notice gear shift was on the dashboard and tell him I hadn't seen such a vehicle with lever on the dashboard.

Then another long silence as he entered the autoroute. Momentarily he tells me "Did you see a man coming out of the taxi before you entered?" Indeed a man came out of the taxi as I rushed to occupy the same. he tells me he wasnt first to enter and exit his taxi today and that alone frightened the shit our of me thinking he could me a murderer or wanted person.

That moment I hadnt answered the driver's quest about what i could see different in his taxi but I was sure I did answer him correctly bcos he didnt say it was a wrong answer.

Soon we pulled at a gas station and as the pump attendant catered for his refill I hoped out to grab a coffee. i asked he needed some and on me. He refused but I insisted. He said I could grab a small coffee. I went in to grab the coffees and came back with more than he expected a small coffee with fried chicken and handed him.

Even then i didnt know why I felt there was some chemistry going on btwn me and the taxi driver. We pull out and I noticed he didnt come out of the taxi then he turns to tell me "You want to know something? You are my first customer today since morning. The man you saw coming out of the taxi saw what you still havent noticed about me. Many have entered my taxi but pulled out as fast as they came in"

I look at this man and tell him people are different but I want him to take me to my rest place - the hotel. Then I ask him why people entered and left his taxi yet it was very clean and well scented but before he answers I ask where he originally came from. He answers he is Iraqi. Then I continue to comment on why one could have exit his taxi bcos he was Iraqi. He says "No. It isnt bcos I am Iraqi and I am surprised you still havent seen what is different in my taxi". I tell sure I hadnt but felt his taxi was like all others.

Then zooming pass a slow moving vehicle he grasps a deep breath and tells me "Dont you see I have no legs?"

I was indeed shocked to see and realize the driver had no legs and neither foot pedals in his taxi. Then I tell him if I had seen he didnt have legs I still wouldnt have minded the ride bcos if he were a danger government wouldnt have issued him a drivers license and let alone license to operate a taxi. Dude pulls of the autoroute to stop and give me a huge Bear hug telling me I was such a special person.

The drive wasnt far but for a $35 ride I indeed gave him a $20 tip and a handshake accompanied with a piercing smile sealed it all. Dude had NO legs except simply stumps for thighs in blue genes crossing over like a Taliban having diner.

And that, fellow Baboons. was the end my day's unique experience in daily life.
