Police have deployed tactical response teams along Entebbe Highway ahead of Mbabazi's return, saying they will not allow commotion along the highway
Police have deployed heavily along Entebbe Road ahead of former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi's arrival on Sunday afternoon.
Mbabazi is expected to arrive at Entebbe Airport at exactly 1:00pm.
Chimp Corp Kenneth Kazibwe says this one of the biggest security deployments in recent years.
"Anti-riot police, counter terrorism personnel and military police are at almost all junctions," says Kazibwe who has just arrived in Entebbe Town.
The reporter adds: "They are patrolling the entire highway both on foot and in pickup trucks."
He says the security forces are armed to the teeth.
Dozens of military and police trucks continue to pour soldiers and cops along the highway.
Security officials dressed in civilian attire can be seen making communications using security headset walkie talkies.
Sniffer dogs have as well been rolled out in full force especially in Entebbe Town.
Police's bike squad comprising commando units are patrolling Entebbe Town with AK 47 assault rifles slung on their backs.
ChimpReports understands that Gen Kale Kayihura on Saturday night directed all police force units to remain on standby with the view of arresting all Mbabazi supporters who will pour on the streets to welcome the former Prime Minister who has been on a tour of Europe and United States.
He also directed Special Operations Directorate to keep guard of all towns along the highway particularly Katwe, Najjanankumbi, Kibuye and Nkumba.
In a press statement issued Saturday, Gen Kayihura warned the law enforcement body would come out strongly to crack down on any individuals or groups that attempt to cause commotion along Entebbe Road.
While he did not mention Mbabazi's return, it is common knowledge that he was warning the former premier's supporters who have been mobilising to give the presidential hopeful a heroic welcome.
Mbabazi has been holding meetings and giving interviews to the foreign media in Europe and United States.
ARREST
Just a few hours after announcing his presidential bid last week, hundreds of Mbabazi's supporters stormed the streets to show their support to the former Prime Minister.
Police quickly swung into action, before arresting over 30 supporters of the toppled NRM Secretary General.
"The police alert the public that we have not been notified of any such activities and therefore they are unlawful. The police will ensure that traffic flow along the highway is not disrupted and business life both in Entebbe and Kampala goes on normally," warned Gen Kayihura yesterday.
Mbabazi, who recently triggered president Museveni's anger by referring to Uganda as a "tired" nation which needs invigoration, said in an interview published this week by UK's Independent newspaper that, "I could be arrested."
He added: "I would not be surprised – but I've been engaged in too many struggles against regimes to be fearful."
President Museveni recently said Mbabazi's name had appeared in many intelligence reports linking him to the fabrication and circulation of sectarian content on social media.
Mbabazi denied the charge.
On his possible arrest, Mbabazi told the UK newspaper: "If I didn't fear Idi Amin then, I won't have fear now."
Mbabazi, who maintains that, "There is a very strong feeling in the population that it is time to change leadership", told VoA network on Wednesday that he had discussed the arrest of his supporters with President Museveni.
He said Museveni directed that arrests should cease but that they had continued.
Observers say a showdown between police and Mbabazi supporters is likely to occur along Entebbe road today.
Kayihura said in a statement that, "We call upon members of the public in Kampala, Entebbe and along the highway to cooperate with police as you always do. It is vigilance that has kept us safe and it is vigilance that will keep us safe."
