KAMPALA - A New Vision court reporter was detained by Police officers at the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala for taking photos of 64-year-old man convicted of fraud.
Betty Amamukirori was held for over one hour by a police officer identified only as Onyanga.
This was after the convict's daughter identified only as Tabitha ordered the police officer to arrest the journalist for taking pictures of her father.
The convict, Patrick James Bamwise had just been convicted of defrauding a family 227-acre piece of land in Buyengo Sub-county Jinja District.
The incident happened when the journalist took pictures in court during a break before the judge sentenced Bamwine to a fine of sh4.5m and cancelled the titles to the land.
Tabitha who claimed to be an employee at the legal department of the Parliament of Uganda, and an advocate of the high court intercepted the reporter and ordered her to delete the photos.
When the reporter turned down the request, she ordered the police officer to detain her and make sure that the photos are deleted from the phone.
The officers in reply threatened to undress the reporter and forcefully search her bag in case she does not heed to the orders.
Amamukirori instead remained adamant.
The grilling came to a halt when Vision Group lawyer, Brenda Akello and Human rights Advocate from Human Rights Network for Journalists came to her aid.
Tabitha seeing that it was a losing battle retreated and disappeared from the court premises.
