The exercise, which targeted 73 hotels in and around the capital Kampala for inspection, saw only five hotels being classified as five star.

On Wednesday the UTB said t 29 out of 73 hotels had made it to the ratings list after it used a standard East African criteria.

The announcement was made ahead of the UTB's inaugural hotel stars awards night set for 26 June.

The red-carpet event is expected to honour hotels with the highest ratings with plaques of excellence.

"At Uganda Tourism Board, we believe that hotel classification will significantly increase consumer expectations from hotels, as well as the quality of service in Uganda's hotels.

"Hotels shall be able to use the provided plaques in attracting and retaining discerning customers," said UTB deputy executive secretary John Sempebwa.

Among the capital's 5 star hotels are Serena hotel, Imperial hotel and Sheraton hotel.

UTB said hotels found claiming to have quality levels they had not earned would be punished.
