Lukwago, Mao factions hold parallel meetings
In Summary
Grievance. Mr Lukwago accuses Mr Mao of arrogating to himself the powers of the DP party electoral commission
Democratic Party (DP) president Norbert Mao yesterday led his faction to a delegates conference in Entebbe as Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago led a rival group in a procession from Kampala to Luweero, where they said they would discuss how to reunite the party.
At the delegates conference at Katomi Kingdom Hotel in Entebbe, Mr Mao arrived at about 12.30pm among chants of "no change" by a group of supporters. A few minutes later, his challenger for the DP's flag bearer slot in the 2016 general election, the Buikwe County MP, Dr Lulume Bayiga, also arrived with his supporters singing "our man".
Mr Bayiga and Mr Mao are contesting for the DP presidency which would pave way for the winning candidate to represent the party in the race for national presidency next year.
On the same day, Mr Lukwago, who accuses Mr Mao of arrogating to himself the powers of the party electoral commission, led a breakaway faction to Luweero for a parallel rally.
The former coordinator of intelligence services, Gen David Sejusa, a serving army officer, attended the DP delegates conference at Katomi Kingdom Resort owned by former vice president Gilbert Bukenya, who was also in attendance.
According to sources, Bukenya provided the venue to the party free of charge. Asked in what capacity he was attending the Opposition party delegates conference yet he is a serving army officer, Gen Sejusa retorted: "I have come to show solidarity with DP in appreciation of their struggle for freedom and good governance over time."
The Uganda Constitution and the UPDF Act bars serving soldiers from participating in politics.
In the run up to the 2010 DP delegates conference in Mbale where Mr Mao was elected party president, a group of members, including Mr Lukwago, boycotted the process, alleging irregularities. Reconciliation efforts before the conference yielded no fruit.
Mr Lukwago, who was recently named the leader of the anti-Mao group, was yesterday accompanied to Luweero by Kawempe North MP Latif Sebaggala from the latter's office in Kyebando.
The convoy of about 50 vehicles was accompanied by a police patrol vehicle at set off. Mr Lukwago's vehicle periodically slowed down for him to wave to by-standers, who enthusiastically returned the compliments.
