President Museveni is set to have his first public meeting with former prime minister Amama Mbabazi since the latter declared he will stand in the 2016 elections.
If it goes as planned, the duo will meet today evening at a fundraising dinner for the rehabilitation of Kigezi College Butobere at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.
President Museveni was invited as chief guest at the fundraising dinner, while Mr Mbabazi will be attending as a former student of the Kabale-based school, according to Mr Moses Ntahobari Turyomurugyendo, the chairperson of Siniya Alumni Forum, the Kigezi College Butobere Old Boys association. On June 15, the two met privately on the day Mr Mbabazi announced his presidential bid.
While the school boasts of successful alumni, Mr Turyomurugyendo says it needs urgent rescue.
"The school is not in a good state and the enrollment has declined, while the infrastructure is in a very bad state. The school has about 250 students, yet its capacity is 1,200 students," Mr Turyomurugyendo said.
Out of the money raised, Mr Turyomurugyendo said the organisation plans to set up a bursary scheme for the best students at the school, motivate staff and renovate the school's dilapidated infrastructure.
The association has already set up a four-year plan in which the students will be supported at two levels - those joining at Form One and at Form Five.
Mr Elvis Twenda, the legal advisor of the group, says they expect to raise at least Shs960m to finance the four-year plan.
Alumni
Notable alumni of the school include Mr Mbabazi, mr Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile (Governor Bank of Uganda), Prof Mondo Kagonyera (Makerere University Chancellor ) Mr Shem Bujura Bageine (minister of State for East African Affairs) and Philemon Mateke (state minister for Regional Affairs), Justice John Bosco Katusi – (retired High Court/ head of the Anti-Corruption Court) and Brig Henry Tumukunde (former CMI chief).
