Besigye nominated to contest as FDC presidential flag bearer
Former FDC president Dr Kiiza Besigye has been nominated to contest for the position of the party's flag bearer ahead of the 2016 general elections.
Besigye was nominated in absentia by the Chairman of the FDC Electoral Commission Dan Mugarura upon verification of his credentials.
He was represented at the nomination by Tororo County MP Geoffrey Ekanya, FDC secretary for mobilization Ingrid Turinawe and Rukiga County MP Jack Sabiiti.
Thousands of his supporters gathered at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi to witness the occasion.
The nomination pits him against the FDC president Gen. Mugisha Muntu who is expected to be nominated for the post on Thursday.
Ekanya said the nomination is a milestone in the restoration of unity in the party. Besigye's nomination papers were picked on Monday by Wilberforce Kyambade, one of his agents and Ingrid Turinawe, the former Chairperson of the FDC Women League.
Earlier Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd from Clock Tower in Kampala accusing them of causing commotion and blocking traffic on Entebbe road. One person was injured in the process.
