{UAH} Police says NO to FDC campaign rallies
Police will only permit campaigns through rallies for candidates officially nominated by the Electoral Commission, police warns.
Early this week, the country's largest opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Electoral Commission officially commissioned a 60-day campaign period for nominated candidates to seek support to become presidential flag bearers in the presidential elections next year.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga says FDC candidates not be allowed to hold any public rallies ahead of the party's September delegates conference.
FDC wrote to police indicating that they would be moving around the country to campaign both in rallies and consultative meetings ahead of the party's delegates conference.
However, one of the candidates Dr Kizza Besigye was stopped on the first attempt to officially launch his campaigns at a rally in Kasangati on Thursday.
Police said the rally had not been cleared. Following the arrest, the other contender, Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu suspended his campaign until the standoff with police is resolved.
Enanga says that although they have received a letter from FDC about the campaigns, the activity is not allowed saying, for now, police will only permit consultative meetings between candidates and the delegates.
FDC president Mugisha Muntu says the decision will be challenged in the courts of law.
