{UAH} Treat all kingdoms equally, says Buruli king
BUDAKA-
The Isabaruli (king) of Buruli and vice chairperson of Uganda Kings and Cultural Leaders Forum has called upon government to stop double standards in returning confiscated properties of cultural institutions.
"The government should correct all historical injustices that were caused mainly to 'small' ethnic groups. The government is aware that during colonialism in Uganda there was also sub-colonialism where 'big' cultures took advantage to dominate and suppress 'small' cultures in their ancestral areas," said Isabaruli chief Mwatyansozi Mwogezi Butamanya this week.
"This sub-colonialism still exists in Uganda today, threatening extinction of some cultures which is very bad. So government should put right all the past injustices equally to all the 65 ethnic groups in Uganda. There should not be preferential treatment if all the 65 ethnic tribes hold the same and equal status," he added.
Isabaruli Butamanya made the remarks during the first coronation anniversary for the king (Ikumbania) of Bugwere Cultural Institution in Budaka District.
Agreement
Isabaruli Butamanya made the remarks in reference to an agreement the government signed with Buganda Kingdom to return the cultural institution's property which were confiscated by the central government in 1967.
"The agreement should be universal to all other ethnic tribes in their cultural institutions, because the practice of sub-colonialism grabbed resources of those ethnic tribes in their respective ancestral areas. Their properties should also be returned," Mr Mwogezi said.
