I have to date tried to differentiate what exactly it means when especially men call women prostitutes in the Uganda context. Is it the case that they actually sell their bodies to men for money, hence the literal defination?
Is it because there is proof that they have so many sexual partners? Is there a law or culture against having a different sexual partner every year? If I married and divorced every two years, does that make me a prostitute? But even where a woman in a relationship ends it to start another, they are called prostitues.
Even when a woman officially ends a marriage like Dr. Specioza Kazibwe and openly starts another relationship they are called prostitutes. Is it the case that Ugandan women have no human right to choose their sexual partners? Where a married man gets another woman, it is normal and encouraged and often it is said that he did so because his wife was a prostitute or witch being the second word that defines wives/women in Uganda.
When a woman gets a new and nice job, she must have done prostitution with the boss. Honestly I have seen many women, including myself, labelled prostitute but I just need to know what the word means in the Uganda context so that next time anyone mentions it, we are on the same page.
My understanding is that a prostitute is a person who has to offer her body in exchange for money and gifts, and often in extremely poor conditions as below.
Can someone tell me how to define a wealthy woman who sexually relates to but financially takes care of numeous school boys at the same time? Are they called prostitutes or are we simply misusing words?
