ONE of the four women who was stabbed by a man they met in a bar last week died at Katutura Intermediate Hospital on Friday.
Cathy Gatonye (40) was stabbed several times by the man after an argument at a bar in Khomasdal on Wednesday last week.
Police inspector Slogan Matheus yesterday confirmed Gatonye's death.
"The charge has been changed from assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm to murder. The suspect has not yet been arrested. However, the police investigations into the matter are in full swing. As I am talking to you now, we know who we are looking for," said Matheus.
Another woman (36), who was also stabbed on the same day and identified as Melissa, was treated at the Roman Catholic Hospital and discharged the same day.
Matheus said the suspect approached the women at midnight when they were sitting in the bar and offered to buy them drinks.
According to Matheus, the man later requested to be driven to an ATM to withdraw more money, so that they could buy more beer.
He said the women offered the man a lift and drove to an ATM at Gamams Service Station where the man withdrew money and then the group drove back to the bar.
Matheus said when they arrived at the bar, a row erupted between the women and the man who stabbed Gatonye and Melissa with a broken bottle before he fled from the scene.
Gatonye's family also confirmed the death, saying they are still trying to come to terms with what happened.
"I cannot even begin to describe the pain that we are going through. To say that we are traumatised is an understatement," said Gatonye's younger sister Jeaneth Haipare yesterday.
Haipare said Gatonye, who was from Otjiwarongo, left behind two children - a 12-year-old son and a 16-year-old daughter.

Gatonye's friend, who was present when she was stabbed, declined to talk about the incident, saying she is too traumatised to talk.
"I'm really not in the right state of mind right now," she said.
Poppy Ngunovandu, who has known Gatonye for close to 15 years, said she has fond memories of her friend whom she described as a quiet person who kept to herself most of the time.
"She never got into petty quarrels with anyone. I'm very heartbroken by what happened to her," said Ngunovandu.

Haipare said Gatonye will be buried in Otjiwarongo this weekend.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders."
