Entebbe.
President Museveni and his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta have vowed to resurrect the idea of shared prosperity through the East African Cooperation by tearing down colonial boundaries and return to the days "when their people were working together" freely.
He said "lasting prosperity" in either country was a near impossibility if as regional countries they don't have a shared vision for prosperity.
"We are safer and stronger when together. The boundaries that separate us are those that we did not create," he said. He said all their ambitions as leaders, is to see how they can tear away colonial mappings and revert to the days when people would cross over at ease.
The two heads of state reiterated the East African spirit at the weekend during a banquet at State House, Entebbe, in honour of president Kenyatta and his wife Margaret.
President Museveni said [president] Kenyatta's visit will speed-up what the two governments are already doing together to exhaust possibilities of regional prosperity.
He also commended Kenya's former president Daniel arap Moi, with whom they resurrected the idea of the East African Community in the early 1990s after nearly two decades of collapse.
"When we talk about the East African cooperation, we are talking about shared prosperity," Mr Museveni was quoted in a statement issued by the Presidential Press Secretary, Ms Lindah Nabusayi.
President Museveni applauded Mr Kenyatta's government for ensuring that clearing of container goods in transit from the coast of Mombasa port to Kampala has now dropped to three days from 18.
"We are working together on modernising the railway to make it faster. When our efforts are concluded, the containers will be here in one day," he added, in reference to the ongoing development of the Standard Gauge Railway that stretches from Mombasa.
President Kenyatta, who arrived in the country last Saturday for a three-day state visit was received by Foreign Affairs minister Sam Kutesa.
He was accompanied by the Kenyan Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Ms Amina Mohamed, National Treasurer Henry Rotich, Cabinet Secretary for Defence Raychelle Omamo, and Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia.
Yesterday, Mr Kenyatta visited Quality Chemical Industries in Luzira and later addressed the Ugandan business community and Kenyans in Uganda. Today morning he is expected to address Parliament before heading for discussions with other regional leaders on South Sudan.
