{UAH} Lukwago faces arrest over youth brigade
Kampala- Police have vowed to arrest Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and members of his youth brigade, saying he has no mandate to recruit and train youth on matters of security
Mr Lukwago on Monday launched a youth group codenamed; Trust and Justice (TJ) Solida crew, to counter pro-NRM youth brigades.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga told Daily Monitor yesterday that Mr Lukwago violated the obligation of the police by establishing his own security group.
"We have sent a letter informing Mr Lukwago that what he did was illegal and interfering with the work of the police as stipulated in the Constitution. Such groups can cause violence by attacking political rivals, engage in robbery and vandalism," said Mr Enanga.
Warning
He warned that if Mr Lukwago and other political parties do not heed the warning, police will not hesitate to arrest them to explain their motives.
"We hope he shall take this warning as a serious matter. But, if he decides to continue with his illegal recruiting of youth, we shall round them up to enlighten us about their intent," Mr Enanga said.
Mutale militia
However, Mr Lukwago told this newspaper yesterday that his group was constituted to protect their rights from what he termed as Mutale and NRM's militias targeting them.
"What we did was within the confines of Article 3 of the Constitution of Uganda. We are granted to defend our rights. There are lots of militia groups and others are still undergoing trainings aimed at hurting us. We have established the group for self- defence," Mr Lukwago.
Mr Lukwago recently accused the current DP leadership of failing to introduce constitutional reforms, warning that this could consign the party to the "dustbin of history".
Lukwago's take
While launching the group on Monday, Mr Lukwago explained that he was moving to counter the pressure group formed by the Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs, Rtd Maj Kakooza Mutale, and other pressure groups.
Last week, Maj Mutale told NTV that his ongoing training of NRM cadres was aimed at ensuring that President Museveni wins next year's presidential election.
Mr Mutale warned that his team would not hesitate to quash whoever stands in its way of ensuring that victory is achieved come next year.
