Grievance. Besigye accuses NRM of using State agencies to suppress opposition parties..
Soroti. In his campaign to drum up support from FDC delegates in Teso sub-region, Dr Kizza Besigye, the FDC presidential party flag bearer candidate, has described President Museveni as a dictator who should be constantly pressured to vacate power by none other than him.
Addressing FDC delegates on Friday in Soroti Municipality, Dr Besigye said he was seeking their votes for two key issues: galvanising support for FDC countrywide and fighting for political reforms to free Uganda of what he termed as President Museveni's dictatorial regime.
"The moment I get the FDC party flag, I am going to tell the flag bearer of NRM that it is not business as usual," Dr Besigye said, drawing applause from the delegates.
"I am not like some of us who think when you are a flag bearer, you have to go and sweet talk the dictator and begin talking words like 'you see, you know, give my people also jobs in Parliament', " Dr Besigye said.
He accused members of the 9th Parliament of not doing enough to advocate political reforms.
Dr Besigye said much as the NRM government accepted the restoration of multiparty politics in the country, NRM party was not separated from the State and uses State organs such as the police to suppress other parties.
"So when you saw me losing elections as it has been mentioned, we were actually competing with no party but the State. That is why you hear the RDCs and police blocking us from conducting our rallies," Dr Besigye said.
He added that this is a violation of the Constitution.
After meeting the FDC delegates, Dr Besigye held a rally at Soroti Independence square.
The rally attracted a mammoth crowd, causing a traffic jam on Soroti-Lira highway which was later cleared by police officers led by the acting Soroti District police commander, Mr David Kamoya.
Many people who attended the rally gave Dr Besigye money to facilitate his campaign.
