Pretoria - The health department has declined to say whether Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi was getting special treatment at Steve Biko Academic Hospital - but nurses told News24 he was in a general ward and sharing a room with other patients.

"He is in good spirits, but still under observation," health spokesperson Joe Maila told News24 on Wednesday, following Motsoaledi's admission earlier this week for pneumonia.

"His condition would be reviewed within 72 hours [since his admission on Monday], so probably later today we will hear what the outcome of that review is."

Maila would not say whether the minister was in a general ward.

But nurses at the hospital told News24 that he was in a general surgery section in a ward with other patients, but had security guards with him.

He was admitted to the same hospital in August 2013 for a planned operation.

In 2009, Motsoaledi reportedly took his 3-year-old son to the same hospital after he had a fever of 40°C.

According to the Mail & Guardian, the child's grandparents initially took the boy to a private hospital but no diagnosis was made.

Motsoaledi then decided to move his son to the public hospital, and within four hours he was diagnosed with sinus problems and operated on.
