{UAH} Pojim/WBK: This is taking brown nosing to a different level. General Museveni is as fit as a fiddle
General Museveni is as fit as a fiddle
Last Wednesday, Ms Sheila Kawamara-Mishambi, a common figure in activist circles, unleashed her mind on President Museveni's footing in an Observer article titled Museveni is too tired to lead Uganda.
First, I thank God that, unlike in the past, Sheila can freely express her views without fear of being hounded or name-called. Second, I was surprised to learn that Sheila has already jumped in with The Democratic Alliance (TDA). Of all the existing political groups, excluding Museveni's NRM, she chose TDA!
Since the theme is tiredness, she must have found them too tired before they have achieved or performed any task. That would mean that Museveni would be justified to have run out of energy since he has spent the last 29 years in fulltime government business at the helm.
That is not counting the two decades he spent in revolutionary politics. For Museveni to still be strong and with his wits about him at this time is a miracle. Indeed, he is extraordinary, which is what his detractors have failed to swallow.
Still, if he was ordinary and tired, it is himself to state so. His communicative abilities are in fact very contributory to the successes he has achieved, leave alone the practical bit.
Former DP president general, John Ssebaana Kizito, famously said in 2005 before DP delegates that "brain power doesn't expire". That is after he was challenged by his competitors on his age; and he went on to win his party's mandate.
It is the same story with Museveni. Most of the work on his table now is brain-work. There is no day we have seen him fail to perform any function because of being feeble or incapacitated. We have seen leaders who have tumbled to the ground, in public and in private, even when they are junior to him. Some of those have consequently been unable to hold the ground in their countries.
Apart from ably carrying himself all over Uganda, Museveni is a front-row statesman whom world and regional bodies refer to first to intervene in matters beyond national scope. His footprint and presence are visible in Somalia, DRC, South Sudan and Kenya, for example. Most recently, he was contacted to stabilize the situation in Burundi.
Someone tired wouldn't be that energetic, influential or efficacious. Younger leaders were available but they didn't stand the test. This trend has been manifested for long when the president outperforms those expected to be fresh and energetic.
This happens because they lack commitment and vision while some don't want to learn. When they are given responsibility, they begin to 'swell' and harbor anti-people motives as well as personal non-starter ambitions.
Many of those have fallen by the wayside, including joining the opposition where they are failing to cause any change. TDA's formation alone is a sign of fatigue. Why form a coalition or alliance if leaders on that side aren't tired?
However, if Museveni is tired, it's Ugandans that have loaded him the lubengo (weight) to carry and there is no shame in that. To tire is to have a record as testified to by works such as ability to provide security of person and property so much so that TDA is being formed to contest in elections because they are sure there will be elections.
If there was war, they would be fleeing, but Museveni is making it possible for them. And it has been a routine. Out of up to 20 rebellious outfits that came up in the past, none ever reached Kampala and none is on Ugandan soil now. Can that be the "too tired Museveni" at work?
Without giving credit to Ugandans who vote Museveni, Sheila says that those who support Museveni are after economic survival. How can this be? How many Ugandans serve in government positions compared to the millions who vote? The few thousands of government workers belong to different beliefs and vote divergently.
And every Ugandan has a right to a livelihood no matter whom and why they vote. That excuse is used by tired contenders who fear to interact with the masses for they will be asked very difficult questions. Museveni, on the other hand, reaches out to everyone because he is resilient, versatile and as fit as a fiddle.
