{UAH} Tororo EC official arrested over missing voters’ register
TORORO- Police in Tororo District have arrested a display officer over allegations of losing a voters' register.
Bukedi region police spokesperson Michael Odongo told Daily Monitor yesterday that the officer stationed at Osukuru Primary School Polling Station in Osukuru Sub-county has been arrested following complaint from residents.
"The residents informed police that the officer had abandoned the station," Mr Odongo said.
She was arrested last Friday after five days of being hunted. Mr Odongo said preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect abandoned the station after losing the register while on an outing with her boyfriend.
Mr Odongo added that upon interrogation, the suspect said her boyfriend sent her to buy chicken in a nearby restaurant and when she came back, the boyfriend had disappeared with the register.
He said the suspect is currently detained at Tororo Central Police station and will be charged with neglect of duty after investigation.
Mr Umar Kiyimba, the EC official in charge of eastern region, acknowledged the disappearance of the voters' register, which he said had 946 names.
"We are working with police to ensure the recovery of the register within the shortest time possible," Mr Kiyimba said.
Way forward
Mr Kiyimba, however, noted that if the register is not recovered, the EC will print another one and employ a new person.
He warned all people employed by EC to be careful and take their jobs seriously.
