Uganda: Sheikh Asks for Security, Cites Threats From Rivals

Amuru — Amuru County Sheikh has called on government to provide him with security, citing assassination threats from fellow Muslim rivals in the district.

Sheikh Swadique Thabit Mustafa said he was arrested and detained in Nimule Town by South Sudanese soldiers on July 17 on suspicion of being a rebel when he went there to lead the Idd-el-Fitr prayers.

He was released on Monday by the South Sudan security officials without any charge after diplomatic negotiations between the governments of the two countries.

Sheikh Mustafa said his arrest was engineered by rival Muslim members, adding that he feared for his life.

He said one of the founder members of the Jamia Mosque which they set up in 2012 at Elegu border point in Amuru District, has been threatening him since he was banished by Muslims over corruption and poor administration.

"I have tried to notify police and other security officials in the district about the threats, but they have not paid attention to me. I am now requesting that the government respond to this matter so that my safety is guaranteed," he added.

Amuru District police commander, Mr Abbey Ngako, said he had not received any complaint from Sheikh Mustafa, but advised him to approach his office for help.

Early this year, Acholi Khadi Sheikh Musa, asked government to provide security for sheikhs to counter possible threats against their lives.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
