{UAH} Chuka Umunna Sacked: Akim Odong

Comrade Akim Odong,

Chuka Umunna was sacked from the Shadow Cabinet today after
challenging Jeremy Corbyn's authority as the new leader. I have told
you before, the man is probably too young to be in front-line
politics. He keeps making blunder after blunder. He totally lacks
judgement and acts on emotions. Here he is behaving like a spoilt
child. Corbyn has just been elected with a 60% majority, his Blairite
candidate Liz Kendall came last, with only 4%, and yet Umunna still
wants to dictate party policy. Being a rebel is a good thing, but
rarely do they win the first prize.

'Corbyn will have to sack me': Defiant Chuka Umunna refuses to resign

Chuka Umunna has refused to join the growing list of big names
quitting the Labour frontbench in a direct challenge to Jeremy Corbyn
to sack him.

The shadow business secretary - who briefly entered the leadership
race won by Mr Corbyn with a landslide yesterday - had been expected
to refuse to work with the leftwinger.

But friends say he is not resigning and is waiting for the
newly-installed leader to give him the boot.

Chuka Umunna has refused to join the growing list of big names
quitting the Labour frontbench in a direct challenge to Jeremy Corbyn
to sack him

Within hours of Mr Corbyn's extraordinary victory being announced,
leadership rivals Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall led a frontbench
exodus, joined by Rachel Reeves, Tristram Hunt, Emma Reynolds and
Chris Leslie.

Mr Ummuna was widely reported to have joined them, after declaring in
July that Mr Corbyn was 'unelectable' and said he would not be able to
serve in his shadow cabinet.

However, MailOnline understands that Mr Umunna is refusing to quit and
is waiting to hear from the leader's office.

Friends admit it is 'unlikely' that he will remain on the frontbench
because of Mr Corbyn's 'positions on a range of issues'.

But they added: 'As far as we are concerned he is in the shadow
cabinet until he is sacked.'

The challenge to the newly-elected leader will be seen by some as an
attempt by Mr Umunna to position for any future leadership bid.

He will be able to argue that he did not waltz out of the shadow
cabinet as others had done but had been forced out by the new hardline
leader.

Jeremy Corbyn, the new Labour leader, is today piecing together his
new shadow cabinet after an exodus of big names from the frontbench in
protest at his extraordinary victory

THERE IS ZERO CHANCE OF A COUP, SAYS NEW DEPUTY TOM WATSON

There is 'zero chance' of a successful coup against Jeremy Corbyn,
Labour's new deputy leader Tom Watson said today in a desperate plea
for unity.

Mr Watson - appearing on BBC1's Andrew Marr Show in place of the
leader, who pulled out to concentrate on shaping his new team - said
he understood the concerns of moderate colleagues about the seismic
political shift.

'He wants to build a broad-based party, he wants a front bench that
represents all the talents and all the views,' he said.

'So I say to colleagues: watch this space, respect the mandate he has
been given from our members, try to unify and let's try and get an
exciting programme for 2020.

Asked about reports of behind-the-scenes moves to oust Mr Corbyn, he
insisted: 'There is zero chance of that happening; Labour Party
members will not accept that.'
.
Mr Umunna was seen as a frontrunner to become Labour leader until he
quit the race days after launching his campaign in May.

He was tipped to become shadow foreign secretary if Andy Burnham or
Yvette Cooper won, but both were trounced by Mr Corbyn.

In the first round, Mr Corbyn won 59.5 per cent of the vote - 251,417
of the 422,664 votes cast - against 19 per cent for Mr Burnham, 17 per
cent for Ms Cooper and just 4.5 per cent for Ms Kendall.

Two weeks ago Mr Umunna appeared to open the door to serving in Mr
Corbyn's team as he urged the party to unite behind whoever became
leader.

He appealed for 'solidarity' and insisted the party must 'accept the
result of our contest when it comes'.

Listing his misgivings about Mr Corbyn's policies, he said it was
important for the party to maintain its pro-European stance, adding he
had 'grave concerns' about increasing national insurance for middle
income families by 7 per cent.

He said he was concerned about Britain withdrawing from Nato, adding:
'I don't think you can go around nationalising things without
compensation, when we often invest in these things in our pension
funds.'

He added: 'You don't only contribute by serving in a shadow cabinet
and I am very clear that whoever is the winner we've all got to get
behind.'

Mr Corbyn today ducked out of a major TV interview this morning to
focus on constructing the top team which will try to make sense of his
anti-austerity programme which delivered his shocking victory.

Last night in the first key appointment to his new team, Mr Corbyn
announced that Rosie Winterton would remain as chief whip, trying to
impose discipline on what is likely to be a highly rebellious party.

Mr Corbyn will have to demand loyalty from his MPs despite voting
against Labour more times than David Cameron in a 33-year Commons
career noted for being a political outsider.

He is expected to appoint some of his closest supporters to plum
roles, including veteran leftwingers John McDonnell and Diane Abbott,
and less-well known figures including Chi Onwurah and Lisa Nandy.

Ed Miliband - whose resignation after leading the party to general
election disaster in May provoked the contest - called on the party to
join him in supporting Mr Corbyn but indicated that he too would not
seek a return to the frontline.

Angela Eagle is tipped to become shadow chancellor while Andy Burnham,
who was roundly defeated by Mr Corbyn in the leadership contest, is
expected to consider a prominent role.

Remaining members of the shadow Cabinet who have insisted they will
not quit include Michael Dugher, who ran Mr Burnham's campaign, Chris
Bryant who said Labour is 'a party not a fan club', Hilary Benn,
Caroline Flint, Mary Creagh and Liam Byrne.
